ÉCLAT LETTER N°5
N°5 | What Is a Raw-Edge Jacket? The Characteristics of Cut-Off Edges and the Tailoring of Romantic Jackets

INTRODUCTION
What Is a Raw-Edge Jacket?
A raw-edge jacket is one that leaves the cut edges of the fabric exposed rather than folding them over and enclosing them. It is also known as a “cut-off” or “raw-cut” design.
When edges are folded over and sewn, the fold becomes the outline of the garment. With a cut-off design, however, the fabric’s own edges are exposed.
The subtle texture of the fibers and the slightly uneven outline are all part of the garment’s character.
However, not all raw-edge garments are made the same way. Depending on the materials used and where the design is incorporated, they may look and be handled differently.
Natural Casualness Amidst the Sweetness of Ruffles
In both versions of the Roman Jacket, cut-off edges are incorporated into the ruffles on the body and sleeves, as well as the sleeve cuffs.
Ruffles have a sweet, feminine impression.
We wanted to retain a natural casualness within that sweetness. That was the most important consideration when choosing this design.
Instead of folding over and shaping the outlines of the layered ruffles, we finished them by highlighting the fabric’s natural texture.
This creates a slightly casual feel amidst the glamour.
We also chose a cut-off design because we wanted to finish the edges of the ruffles with a light, effortless look.
It is not just about the shape of the ruffles, but also how their edges are finished.
Though it is a small detail, it contributes to the overall impression of the garment.
The Same Raw Edge, Different Expressions Depending on the Material
The Roman Jacket is available in denim-look and satin materials.
Even though the same cut-off design is used in both, the two materials create different expressions.

The Denim-Look Material Creates a Fringe-Like Outline
To check how the edges would finish, we created cut-off samples using several different denim-look fabrics.
From those, we chose a material whose cut edges created a fringe-like texture.
Not only the color and feel of the fabric, but also the outline it would create when cut was an important criterion in choosing the material.
Our goal was a casual feel that was not overly feminine.
By layering the fabric’s natural texture and casual edges over the glamour of the ruffles, we created a look that feels right at home in everyday outfits.

The Satin Material Creates a Clean, Elegant Finish
With the satin material, the cut-off design creates a substantial finish at the edges of the ruffles.
It offers a clean, elegant look that differs from the fringe-like texture of the denim-look material.
Even though the ruffles and cut-off design are the same, changing the material changes the impression created by their outlines.
A garment’s character is created not only by its shape, but also by the combination of fabric and construction.
When comparing the two Roman Jackets, be sure to take a close look at the edges of the ruffles.
Is It Okay if a Raw-Edge Jacket Frays?
When choosing a raw-edge garment, you may wonder, “What should I do if a thread comes loose from the edge?”
How cut edges change depends on the nature of the fabric and the specifications of the garment. The same care does not apply to all raw-edge garments.
With the Roman Jacket, we recommend enjoying the natural character of the cut edges as part of the design.
Even if the edges concern you, please avoid picking at them or pulling on loose threads. Enjoy them as they are, without altering them as much as possible.
Also, please refrain from cutting loose threads with scissors. Cutting them may actually cause more fraying.
Rather than altering the edges to tidy them, let the fabric’s natural character shine.
If you are concerned about how threads are coming loose or how the garment looks after wear, please contact Atelier éclat before attempting to treat them yourself.
To Enjoy the Roman Jacket for Years to Come
To enjoy the natural texture of the material, choose the care that is right for the garment.
For both the denim-look black and black Roman Jackets, we recommend avoiding home washing. For care, please use gentle dry cleaning at a professional cleaner.
Do not judge the garment by its denim-like appearance or the name of the material alone; please check the garment’s care label.
When taking the garment to the cleaner, please let them know that it features a cut-off design so they understand its construction.
※ This guide is for the Roman Jacket. For other raw-edge garments, please check the instructions and care labels provided by their respective brands.
Next Time You Look at Clothing, Look at Its Outline
Where the ruffles layer.
Where the sleeves puff out.
And the edge where the fabric ends.
You may not notice it from afar, but as you draw closer, you can see the character that makes a garment unique.
The cut-off design of the Roman Jacket is one of those details.
Natural casualness amidst the sweetness.
An everyday feel amidst the glamour.
By understanding the fabric and construction we chose to achieve this, we hope you will find another thing to love about this garment.
With love,
Atelier éclat
